One of the oldest existing models of drums manufactured by Sonor is the 1942 Johannes Link Parade Snare, an exceptionally heavy snare drum boasting an aluminum shell and robust tension rods. In the 1980s, Sonor's slogan proudly declared The Rolls of drums. The high-quality drums featured very thick (13 mm) and extremely durable shells crafted from beech wood with innermost and outermost ply layers of exquisite furniture-grade veneers, including rosewood and bubinga. Renowned drummer Nicko McBrain of Iron Maiden and the legendary Steve Smith of Journey were two prominent Sonor artists of the 1980s, alongside Thomas Haake of Meshuggah and jazz great Jack DeJohnette. Sonor revolutionized drum-construction with the invention of the modern screw thread design in the early 20th century. Additionally, they pioneered the metal snare drum idea. Influenced by Sonor's groundbreaking work, William F. Ludwig developed a similar concept in his early years while living in Germany, which he later utilized in Chicago. As the decade progressed, market trends began shifting towards thinner, lighter drums, prompting Sonor to create a line called Sonorlite and Hilite - a marked departure from the earlier philosophy of drum shells resonating like stringed instruments. This change reflected an understanding that thinner shells yield lower fundamental tones.
