A metal object's ring amplitude decreases faster when imperfections like cracks, inclusions, and surface rust exist; thus, it rings for a shorter time or may not ring at all. This principle can be used to swiftly identify flawed chain links. By positioning the chain between two supports and orientating the links to touch only one side with a Piezo Transducer in the middle, a pulse is emitted resembling striking a bell. The transducer also records the link's ringing noise. A damaged link will have a shorter ring duration and a higher resonant frequency as it wears, similar to a small bell. Monitoring both these factors can help determine if a chain link is worn or damaged.
