Sonic R is a 1997 racing video game developed by Traveller's Tales and Sonic Team for Sega Saturn and published by Sega. The game was re-released on Microsoft Windows in 1998. It was also re-released as part of the Sonic Gems Collection on PlayStation 2 and Nintendo GameCube in 2005. Players take control of one of ten characters from the Sonic series and participate in thrilling races on various tracks inspired by Sonic's world. The story revolves around winning a series of high-stakes racing tournaments, thwarting Doctor Robotnik's plans to steal the Chaos Emeralds and enslave the world. Sonic R is the third 3D Sonic game and the first in the series to feature 3D graphics. It was co-developed by Traveller's Tales and Sonic Team over a period of nine months, taking advantage of the Sega Saturn's capabilities. The game's soundtrack was created by Richard Jacques with vocals provided by TJ Davis. Iconic tracks like "Super Sonic Racing" have become staples in subsequent Sonic games.
