Solomon Grundy bursts into the DC Comics universe as a menacing supervillain, while also inhabiting the DC animated universe in a role that is frequently antiheroic. He was first conceived as a murder victim revived back into existence through a physical and undead state or reanimation. Although more modern versions of this character occasionally deviate from his initial origin story, Grundy remains a villain whose backstory has been extensively developed within comic book history. Created in reference to the traditional 19th century nursery rhyme, Grundy originally rose to prominence as an adversary for Alan Scott, DC's original Green Lantern during the Golden Age of comic books. His nemesis credentials soon earned him prominent enemies amongst Superman and Batman alike, in addition to fostering relationships with Swamp Thing through intricate ties.
