Solidoodle Torsional Anti-Backlash Nut for Z-Axis

Solidoodle Torsional Anti-Backlash Nut for Z-Axis

thingiverse

Designed for Solidoodle 2 with aluminum platform and original lead-screw, this anti-backlash nut design can be used with or without the nut attached to the platform. However, it hasn't been tested yet. It helps with backlash from changing direction in Z but the effectiveness on wobble or Z banding caused by an eccentric lead screw is uncertain. The inspiration came from a Kerk anti-backlash nut, but due to size constraints, the design had to be redesigned. This customizable version's usefulness is questionable, and you can check it out here: http://www.thingiverse.com/apps/customizer/run?thing_id=232253. Revisions include removing printed threads because they cause too much friction and an unnecessary feature for easier installation. Materials needed include a spring, two 5/16-18 nuts (or one if you have the original threaded insert), and a small sheet of rubber gasket material. Assembly instructions involve printing parts with 2 perimeters and 25% infill, creating a torsion spring, cutting gasket material into a ring shape, and assembling the anti-backlash nut. To install, piece together the assembly, insert the rubber gasket if available, put it onto the lead screw while holding it together, and add torsion to the spring by tightening the upper lead screw nut.
