Soldier of Fortune is a first-person shooter video game developed by Raven Software and released by Activision on February 29, 2000. The game was later released for the PlayStation 2 and Dreamcast consoles, while Loki Software created a port for Linux. Digital releases were made available on GOG.com in October 2018 along with its two successors. The player takes on the role of a U.S. mercenary tasked with foiling a terrorist plot to acquire nuclear weapons. The game features realistic depictions of violence made possible by the GHOUL engine, which includes the dismemberment of human bodies. This unique visual style caused controversy in Canada and Germany where it was classified as a restricted film. The technology behind the game creates 26 distinct zones on enemy bodies allowing for varied reactions depending on the targeted area. During development, plans were made to set part of the game in Bosnia using real weapons almost exclusively, with damage affecting player movement and dexterity. Upon release, Soldier of Fortune received positive reviews from critics and sold well initially. Two sequels followed: Soldier of Fortune II: Double Helix (2002) and Soldier of Fortune: Payback (2007). In 2010, Soldier of Fortune Online was published in Korea as a massively multiplayer online first-person shooter game.
