I've seen most of them are horizontal, but I prefer to store the spools vertically using a 19x6x7 bearing, which works very well even with a 2 lb spool that spins freely with almost no drag. This is a great improvement in soldering big projects. The spool hole is assumed to be at 19 mm, but it may vary depending on your setup; you can adjust the solder-caddy-spool files accordingly.
