Solar Lens Filter Mount
prusaprinters
In preparation of taking photos of the upcoming total eclipse in my area, I purchased a solar lens filter that is big enough for a large lens that I am renting. Before the event I wanted to practice shooting the sun on a smaller lens, so I put together this mount that slides onto my Nikkor Z 70-200mm lens (and other lenses with similar diameter).I created the model in Fusion 360 and in the .f3d file there are custom properties that can be edited to adjust the model for different size lens filters and lens diameters.I printed the model on a Bambu P1P, on PLA with some default settings and supports. Before removing the supports I lined up some holes on the solar filter and (very slowly) used a drill to drill some holes for the lens mounting screws to go into to hold the solar filter into place. There is a lip inside the part you slide over the lens to hold the mount into place. The idea is that before and after totality you need to use the solar filter, but during totality you can pop the solar filter off and take photos without it.IMPORTANT: because this slides on and off of a lens and it’s held on by gravity, to avoid dropping the solar filter be sure to mount the camera (if using a tripod) and face it upward before sliding the mount over the lens. The .stl for this model was designed to fit this solar lens filter: https://www.mrstarguy.com/StarGuy-Adjustable-125-155mm-Solar-Filter-p/sgft043y.htmYou don't need a mounted solar filter, though! You can purchase solar paper, cut it down to size and tape it onto this 3D-printed mount. I went with the mounted one before I realized you can make your own (just be sure to research and find the right solar filter paper to use).
