Socrates was a Greek philosopher born between 469 and 470 BCE. He is widely regarded as the father of Western philosophy. Plato, his most renowned student, went on to teach Aristotle, who in turn tutored Alexander the Great. This chain of events allowed Socratic philosophy to spread far and wide across the known world during Alexander's conquests. Socrates was born around 469 or 470 BCE to Sophronicus, a skilled sculptor, and Phaenarete, a midwife. In his youth, he studied music, gymnastics, and grammar, which were common subjects for young Greeks. He followed in his father's footsteps by becoming a sculptor, and legend has it that he was an exceptionally talented artist. His statue of the Graces on the road to the Acropolis remained admired well into the 2nd century CE. Socrates demonstrated remarkable bravery during his military service and played a heroic role at the Battle of Potidaea. He saved the life of General Alcibiades, showcasing his exceptional courage under fire.
