I long ago took a Games Workshop Leman Russ Model and extensively modified it to resemble a WW2-style tank with supported suspension. Unfortunately, the results were not exactly what I had envisioned, so when I mastered 3D modeling I created a precise replica of the model I truly desired. It appears that printing this model would indeed be more costly than my initial kit-bashing attempt, but it has been an invaluable experience for learning about digital manufacturing processes.
