Within the game of chess, pawns are typically viewed as disposable assets safeguarding more valuable pieces in the back row. I sought to reverse this paradigm by elevating the importance and humanity of these pawns while rendering the rear pieces faceless and unnatural. To achieve this effect for the rear pieces, I employed the mesh tool to manipulate them, varying their resolution levels and decreasing their size as they ascend towards the king. Functionally, I added minute details to distinguish each piece beyond mere size and resolution, also providing users with subtle cues about their unique movements. In contrast, I opted to depict three distinct pawns symbolizing an ascent from the hierarchy's grasp as they decline in power and scale. The chessboard itself is crafted from a combination of acrylic and ceramic prints, juxtaposing these disparate materials to hint at the concept of differentiation and its potential applications to the pieces. Furthermore, I elevated the board from the floor to prompt viewers to consider themes of hierarchical structure.
