So-called Ceres

In ancient Roman religion, Ceres emerged as a powerful goddess associated with agriculture, grain crops, fertility, and motherly relationships. Initially, she stood at the heart of Rome's plebeian or Aventine Triad, later paired with her daughter Proserpina in rituals that Romans dubbed "the Greek rites of Ceres". The seven-day April festival of Cerealia featured the widely popular Ludi Ceriales (Ceres' games), while she was also celebrated during the May illustration of fields at the Ambarvalia festival and at harvest-time. Furthermore, Ceres played a significant role in Roman marriages and funeral rites. Notably, Ceres is the sole agricultural deity from Rome's pantheon to be included among the Dii Consentes, equivalent to Greece's Twelve Olympians. Romans saw her as the counterpart of the Greek goddess Demeter, whose mythology was creatively reinterpreted for Ceres through Roman art and literature.
