Snowman Christmas Ornament (with 3d printed threads!)

(I wrote an article with some tips on incorporating threads into your models. You can find it on my website at 3dprintedman.com. It uses this design as an example.)

This snowman is made of three different pieces that join together using 7.5mm 3d printed threads. (No glue required!) I printed everything with a 0.4mm nozzle and 0.2mm layer heights except as noted in the instructions below:

snowman body: Use adaptive layer heights to set the thread layers to 0.1mm or lower. I like to make sure there is a gradual decrease in layer height so the transition is not so obvious on the outside of the part. You should use a filament that is not prone to oozing because that will obstruct the threads. There is a “test noggin” file that can be used to check your settings on the threads before you attempt printing the full part.

hat top: Print with the threads facing upwards. Set a solid solid infill threshold area that will give the threaded portion 100% infill. Use adaptive layer heights to set the thread layers to 0.1mm or lower. Use 3 perimeters to strengthen the threads. I made the filament swap at around 7.6mm from the buildplate (optional).

hat brim: Nothing special, you can slice with whatever standard profile you like.

Assembly notes: Make sure that the “hat brim” part is always under the hat when you are threading the pieces together because the external threads can bottom out in the internal threads otherwise. There is a small tunnel through the top of the hat that an ornament hook can be strung through. I bent the hook so it would poke through and then used some pliers to pull it through and secure it as you see in the photo.

Merry Christmas!
