Snap-locking sphere container inspired by Demi-sphere
thingiverse
Despite loving the Hollow Demi-sphere (http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3068), disappointment ensued upon discovering it doesn't snap fit and falls apart easily. To rectify this, I remodeled it in OpenSCAD, adjusting cone angles for a snapping sphere that stays together. The downside? Parts are no longer identical, but they're still great for printing due to flat bases (larger part has a top base too). Since on vacation without my RepRap, I pre-rendered angle options: 5, 7, and 10 degrees. Print corresponding parts like metasphere_7degrees_larger_part.stl and metasphere_7degrees_smaller_part.stl. Initially tested a 40-degree angle for illustration purposes, but smaller angles are recommended to avoid bending issues. Back home soon and plan to print some for testing; excited to see Thingiverse community's speed in printing it! UPDATE: Printed the 7-degree version, which didn't provide enough snap or stability. Adjusted design by modifying cones into straight cylinders, maintaining flat base, uploaded new design and 15-degree version STL file, hoping for better results in iteration 2. UPDATE AGAIN: Those versions failed too; second part lacks a flat base. Tried another approach and created a nice snapping ball (http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3272).
