WARNING! First hack at this. I have been trying to work out how the SMT tape collectors of this type work. Turns out it is really simple, they skid on a axle if the tape is taught and rotate if it ain't. The attached photo from the Net gave the game away. So, I give you my first pass design. The idea is you use LM8SUU or LM8UU nylon bearings (maybe needing a little trim for the 8mm tape collector). The idea is a heat set insert for M2, and then an M2 screw as the slip-brake. I will update with 24mm tape collector but I am waiting on LM8SUU parts to turn up to build the prototype for testing. Currently there are no tweaks, but your printer software should have smarts to adjust. As this is SMT cover tape we're talking about, that aspect need not be super precise. Opting to use 8mm linear rod. Still to come then, the mounting and drive system. Otherwise, obviously you'll need a stepper, a 60T or 80T pulley with 8mm ID etc. Of course, there are a raft of igus style 3D print options for the bearings as well, on this very site.
