Diagnosing vacuum lines and exhaust leaks on automobiles can be a frustrating task. Companies have developed kits that use smoke to test these systems, but they often come with a hefty price tag, upwards of $750. To create a more affordable solution, one individual searched for the cheapest smoke machine available on Amazon, which cost around $26 plus an additional $10 for fluid. With a few cheap parts readily available, this person managed to build a machine that rivals the expensive kit's performance for a fraction of the cost. The homemade setup consists of two key components: the main adapter and the cone. The main adapter is designed to be versatile, requiring no modifications to the smoke machine itself. A simple automotive O-ring is attached to the backside, while the end fits a 1/4 inch ID x 1/4 inch MIP hose barb adapter. This setup allows for easy attachment of a pneumatic hose and a female quick disconnect. The cone component features an opening that accepts a male quick disconnect fitting, with the opposite end designed to fit into hoses up to 1 inch in diameter. Additional adapters can be created by simply scaling up the design, such as for exhaust systems. To utilize this setup, one must disconnect a line at the end of the vacuum system (like the brake booster line), insert the cone, and turn on the machine to detect any visible leaks. Depending on the affected parts, necessary repairs will vary. This approach eliminates the need for systematic part replacement until the issue is resolved. The process of creating this device was a fun project, utilizing 3D modeling software such as New Matter Mod-T with Cura and Fusion 360. The designed parts were optimized to require no fill material, and proper adhesion was achieved without the need for a raft. It's worth noting that the screw holes were intentionally made slightly undersized to facilitate easier drilling to the correct size. Additionally, the hole for the threaded barb adapter is precision-cut, but beveled to aid in insertion – caution should be exercised when inserting this part to avoid damage.
