A couple of individuals successfully attach an Atom smoke alarm to aluminum extrusion or a NEMA17 motor. These compact smoke detectors are small in size, measuring only 40mm in diameter, and lightweight, weighing in at approximately 43g, making them easy to mount on a printer or extruder. Some initial concerns arose regarding the potential for plastic fumes to trigger the alarm, but fortunately, this has not been an issue so far. As yet, no attempt has been made to intentionally expose the alarm to burning plastic in order to gauge its sensitivity. Update: The alarm did activate once during a printing session involving transparent ABS filament. While it appears that consistency is not a strong point, further steps will likely be taken to relocate the alarm to a safer distance from the extruder if this issue persists.
