Smilodon, an iconic prehistoric mammal, embodied a now-extinct genus that harbored species like the infamous sabre-toothed cat. Often mislabeled as a tiger, this fearsome predator shares little genetic affinity with modern tigers. Dominating the Pleistocene epoch (2.5 million years ago), these massive mammals towered over one meter tall and weighed up to 880 pounds! Smilodons stalked enormous herbivores such as bison or camels with ruthless efficiency. Ultimately, their reliance on large prey doomed them to extinction around 10,000 years ago when the vast herds of North and South America vanished. This incredible specimen was captured by the Redpath Museum at McGill University.
