SmartrapCore Twin Head project (V5.1)
thingiverse
The idea of being able to print two different filaments at once using the SmartrapCore is highly alluring. I am currently working on this project (it is still in its early stages, with no real-world testing completed yet), with the goal of making as few changes to the printer itself as possible. So far, it appears promising, requiring only three new components: a large slideX piece to hold two heads, a new hotends fan, and Zsensor support, along with an optional new printing zone cooling fanduct. Update (October 5, 2015): I have redesigned the entire system to allow for necessary adjustments in hot ends relative height, as well as a few extra modifications and improvements. It is too early to determine if this revised design will function properly; I have printed the parts but have not had time to test them in actual double filament printing. Update (Version 5.0, December 12, 2015): Many improvements have been made, mostly related to cooling (hot ends and printing zone), along with an important addition: support for 8mm rods! Choose the slideX that best fits your setup, and you're ready to go. You can also select from a regular 40mm fanduct or the significantly better two-part fanduct for radial fan. Both use the same fixation system, allowing either one to be used on the same slideX. Update (Version 5.1, June 23, 2016): Several small changes have been made, mostly related to the mobile dual head support, to improve its stability and make it easier to insert GT2 belts. Additionally, adjustments were made to the front part (dual hotends fan support) to simplify printing of the Zsensor support portion, as well as the main slideX body part to enhance the moving part's stability. The fanduct bottom part of the printing zone radial fan cooling system was also modified to improve its shape and ease of printing. A small material support has been included in the STL file for the mobile dual head support to facilitate printing; this can easily be removed before use. No additional material supports are needed to print the entire component set.
