Smartphone to GoPro mount adapter

Purpose of this design

If you travel with light language, like on a hike or when touring with a bicycle or motorbike, it makes sense to keep everything minimalistic. You may already have mounts for your action camera with you, so why not mount your mobile phone to them.

Per feedback from one user, I have updated the post to come with three different clamping screws now (80, 90 and 100mm). So it should fit even really big phones now. Simply pick the screw that fits your phone best.

If you should not have a tripod with GoPro style mount, be my guest and get yours here:
https://www.prusaprinters.org/prints/39814

That tiny tripod allows to position your phone or action cam perfectly for a group photograph or to take a non-shaking video clip. When folded, it serves well as little selfie stick

And if you should ever run out of the needed thumb screws, or would like to mount your phone to a handlebar (use with caution), I also have something for you:
https://www.prusaprinters.org/prints/59568

Different sizes (Update 07.10.21)

Upon request, I have added clamps of bigger sizes. They are to be used with thicker phones (up to 12mm, while the smaller parts are for phones up to 10.5mm). They are also longer along the screw. That is to reduce the bending force on the screw, that becomes noticeable once the phone is of bigger width.

Printing

To print these parts is actually very easy. Simply print them in the uploaded orientation with 100% infill. Only one parts needs supports (from build plane only), that is the lower bracket. Due to its internal thread, it was not possible to print it on it's side.

I have used PETG from DasFilament.de for the original print (on Prusa Mini), which is actually the material that I recommend due to it's flexibility. The bolt will bend a little, depending on the thickness of your phone. But since it is printed laying flat on the bed, it is actually quite strong.

Additionally I have tried to print this design from PLA on a Ender3, that also worked out well. For short and occasional usage PLA should be fine, but keep in mind that PLA “flows” over time when it is under constant load. Therefore the clamp could become a bit loose if you leave you phone clamped in for a long time.

Using this part

It goes without saying, that you use this part on your own risk. I have tested the design with Samsung Galaxy S7 with a silicon cover, that has worked extremely well. I have also tested it on a S5 without cover, that worked but did not clamp as tightly as on the silicon. If you have no cover on your phone, you may want to clue a bit of rubbery material into the clamp.

Disclaimer

I use the term GoPro mount as a synonym for all the action cam mount out there, that are based on a 3mm spaced fork system. I am not affiliated with the company or the brand.
