I took the idea from a Make article but created my own version that's slightly different and printed in 3D. It starts with a base built around a laser pointer lens - suddenly, you have a cheap, portable, and rugged microscope. Here are the instructions to make one: A CAD model of the base can be found on Onshape, where I uploaded it for free. You can use that as a template to drill or machine your acrylic pieces. You'll need to purchase these parts to assemble it: If you swap out the screws from metric to something else like M3, make sure to change the corresponding hex nuts, washers, and wingnuts too, not just those three but also possibly the compression spring.
