Smart Seat

The person who took on this challenge suffers from a neuromuscular condition, forcing them to spend 14–16 hours daily in their wheelchair. This prolonged immobility poses severe health risks that are further exacerbated by those with limited sensation in their lower limbs. The team at Team Smart Seat created an innovative solution for people spending extended periods seated in their wheelchairs. By developing thin stickers embedded with sensors held together with a 3D printed frame, they track pressure points and send data to a mobile app designed to prevent discomfort, skin damage, and other related health complications. This app can automatically notify the user when it's time for a change in position. The Team Smart Seat solution received recognition as a Google.org innovation award winner.
