Smart Dart

Smart Dart and Smart Dart deployment mechanism work together with an autonomous hexapod to deploy geophone sensors from a height of over 50 meters for seismic surveying purposes. Smart Dart Assembly Instructions The Smart Dart was designed to fit Poof Jarts, a lawn dart used for lawn games. The electronics inside the dart are a Photon, a wifi-enabled microcontroller made by Particle, and a 3-axis accelerometer that fits inside the accelerometer card. The Smart Dart deployer mechanism was designed around a TowerPro995 servomotor and is intended to be velcro'd onto the battery of a hexacopter. Assembly: Print two SDMaleSlots and one of each other part. Unscrew a Jart and cut slots into the rim of the fin part near the screw holes to fit the SDShells all the way into the dart fin part. Place the SDMaleSlots into the female slots on the SDShells - you will need to hammer them in. Screw the hammered-in SDMaleSlots into the fin part of the Jart. Glue in the accelerometer into the accelerometer card slot, making sure to keep the accelerometer parallel to the accelerometer card. A glue gun works well for this. Slide the accelerometer card into the center slot of the SDShells. Screw a geophone tip to the SDCap and further screw this assembly into the bottom of the SDShells. Geophone terminals can be fed through the holes at this time. SD Deployer Assembly Instructions The Smart Dart deployer mechanism was designed around a TowerPro995 servomotor, intended to be velcro'd onto the battery of a hexacopter. Additional supports have been created and will be uploaded later. Assembly: Print out DeployerOnOneSheet with a laser cutter. Fitting the pieces together without screws: (Steps 3 through 7) From the bottom up, stack the large plate with the circular slot, then the smaller circular slotted plate, next the small gear, and lastly the small circular spacer. Slide the 3D printed shaft into the stacked arrangement. Place the T-shaped housing on top of the stack - slide shaft through hole. You can now place the servo on top of the T-shaped housing in the rectangular slot with the gear teeth closest to the stacked arrangement. The large gear can now be placed underneath the housing on the servo gear (If the fit is loose, try turning the gear around.) Place screws in all the screw holes. The shaft screw hole should be on the bottom. The screws for the servo will require nuts, while the rest should just be tapped into the acrylic.
