Small Wire Spool
thingiverse
A buddy needed simple, cheap spools that fit in with the others he had for wire wrapping wire. Plenty of it was available. Internal dimensions of each usable part measure 30mm core, 20mm depth and 23mm width. Two holes sit on each side for start and end use. The larger one ends up with a final internal width of 36mm, hopefully. I don't recommend these spools for something like filament. They're best used for thin stuff like wire or thread. Print two of these spools in ABS plastic. You might get away with printing just the top layer, but make sure to solidify the core unless you really know your printer's strengths and weaknesses. If necessary, trim them down so that they fit together easily - I'm still working on fine-tuning this step. Next, coat both sides of each spool's center part with acetone, let it soak in for a bit, then add a bit more and press the two halves together firmly while checking to make sure they're properly aligned. A weight applied will ensure a strong hold - stronger even than what comes from the print layers themselves. A helpful hint: To ensure these spools really snap into place, flip them 180 degrees so that the holes are on opposite sides.
