This statue is one of a group emerging from the summits of the Duomo windows. This particular figure embodies John, a prominent apostle among Jesus' twelve closest followers as described in the New Testament. As the son of Zebedee and Salome, he shared a brother in James, who was also one of Jesus' twelve most trusted apostles. Historically, Church leaders have associated him with John the Evangelist, John of Patmos, John the Elder, and the Beloved Disciple; however, contemporary theologians and scholars have not yet reached a unified understanding regarding their individual identities. Traditionally, Christian denominations widely acknowledge that John the Apostle is the author of several New Testament books - this being why he's often depicted holding or writing the Holy Scripture.
