Small puffed-up explosion from the 660-year-old Obsidian Dome eruption in California. This type of explosion is called a breadcrust bomb because it has an inside that's full of bubbles and an outside that's cracked like the crust on a loaf of bread. Based on its texture, we can figure out that this little explosion happened at temperatures above 650 degrees Celsius, hot enough for the center to expand. Prepared by Gabi Labishak.
