Small Bell, Edinburgh Castle
sketchfab
Historical records reveal that small copper-alloy bells like this one were used in religious services from the early 1200s at Edinburgh Castle. Archaeologists uncovered this example during excavations between 1989 and 1991. Similar discoveries from the 800s to 900s suggest these bells served multiple purposes beyond religious functions. A later find in Norwich has sparked debate about its possible use as a harness bell, a small bell attached to a riding-horse's harness rope. This particular bell features a cone shape with a broken rim around its open-mouthed edge. The loop used for hanging the bell is flat and smooth. Unfortunately, no remnants of the bell clapper remain. For more information about Edinburgh Castle, visit our website at [website URL]. Measurements: 30 x 32mm. Item ID: EDIN312 Rae Project.
