Slinky is a self-contained unit within a swarm of robots designed to navigate challenging terrain, similar to the lunar surface. Each of Slinky-bot's four legs operates independently and are connected to its body via continuous rotation drives with built-in position feedback. This adaptable design enables five distinct locomotion modes: 'Slinky,' 'Rolling,' 'Caterpillar,' 'Quadruped,' and 'Whegs.' Initially, 'Slinky' and 'Rolling' were selected as primary means of movement; however, the other three modes can be employed temporarily to navigate obstacles and improve adaptability. By incorporating back flips or cartwheels into its movement, Slinky's wide surface-to-mass ratio ensures minimal ground pressure, allowing it to traverse various surfaces - even those with loose material like sand or dust.
