Artist: John Gibson Period: 1834 Material: Marble Location: Walker Art Gallery Dimensions: 55 x 101 x 112 cm Scanned: 2016 Scanner: Artec Spider Gibson passionately created multiple versions, scaled-down replicas, and variations of his statues and reliefs for patrons visiting his Roman studio. With some of these, Gibson skillfully modified repetitions with subtle adjustments. For example, the three existing marble copies of The Sleeping Shepherd Boy, first designed in 1818, each display distinct differences, including the placement and size of the shepherd's staff, hat, and cloak, the style of his hair, and whether or not a lizard is present on the tree trunk. Overall, however, the fundamental form of the shepherd remains consistent and easily identifiable to those familiar with Gibson's work.
