Sleeping Ariane at The Louvre, Paris

Sleeping Ariane at The Louvre, Paris

cults3d

The girl reclining on a rock presents an intriguing twist on the celebrated Sleeping Ariadne of the Vatican Museum, where the composition is inverted. In both instances, it is Ariadne, daughter of King Minos, who lies abandoned on Naxos, despite having played a pivotal role in the defeat of the Minotaur. The Roman sculptor drew inspiration from a Greek original dating back to the second century BC, which he skillfully edited and reinterpreted.
