Sledge with Mythological frieze

Sledge with Mythological Frieze, Second Half of the 18th Century, Liège (Belgium), Wood, Sheet Metal. Musée du Cinquantenaire (Brussels, Belgium). Created with ReMake and ReCap from AutoDesk. The crate's semi-circular back shape marries perfectly with a shell-shaped front painted in silver gray. The enveloping back is lined with vibrant blue fabric that adds a pop of color. A hidden storage compartment is cleverly concealed within the seat cushion. The box's exterior is beautifully painted to resemble reddish-brown and beige marble, bordered by a frieze featuring mythological creatures in light shades against a dark background. The molded skates describe a smooth S movement and present, at their junction, an intricately carved openwork floral pattern. This sled's ornate repertoire, blending elements of Louis XV and Louis XVI styles, makes it easy to pinpoint its origin in the second half of the 18th century.
