The expedition by Herakles and Theseus to Themiskyra unfolds vividly on this artifact, revealing the intense battle with the Amazons that followed. This recurring theme in Greek art held significant importance for Maussollos, drawing heavily from Karian tradition. According to legend, an axe wielded by Amazon queen Hippolyte resided at Labraunda, a sacred sanctuary of the Hekatomnid dynasty, underscoring its crucial role. The frieze slab depicting Hippolyte in combat with Herakles may have occupied a prominent spot on the monument's east side, perhaps even serving as a central focal point. This pivotal scene likely commanded attention from viewers approaching the Mausoleum. Situated atop the podium of the structure, the frieze was positioned to dominate the viewer's gaze. A corner block discovered in Bodrum's castle suggests that the frieze converged at corners and possibly encircled all four sides of the Mausoleum. Richly colored, the background was painted a deep blue, while the figures' skin tone was rendered in vibrant red, occasionally enhanced with gilded accents. Metal reinforcements for weapons, reins, and bridles were often added by sculptors according to their personal preference.
