Slabs from Amazon Frieze 3
myminifactory
Marble slab of the Amazon frieze of the Mausoleum of Halikarnassos depicts fierce battles between Greeks and Amazons. This iconic slab showcases three dynamic figures, a Greek warrior and two Amazonian fighters, alongside a majestic horse and another pair of combatants carved across the join between adjacent slabs 1013 and 1014, both featuring Greeks. On the left, a mounted Amazon charges down a Greek opponent, her horse rearing up on its hind legs while she raises her right hand to strike with an axe behind the horse's head. Leaning forward, her upper body is visible just behind the horse's head as she wears a chiton open below the belted waist to expose her left thigh and buttock. A fallen Greek lies in the distance, with only his outstretched right leg remaining. To the right, a nude Greek warrior defends himself against an Amazon on foot by extending his shield upwards to block her thrusting axe or spear. The Amazon raises her right arm above her head to deliver a devastating blow. The Greek warrior likely held a spear in his right hand. On slab 1013, metal reins were inserted into drill-holes to secure the horse's harness, and the attached weapons may have been carved or painted. Slab 1013 forms part of a sequence that continues on adjacent slabs 1014 and 1015.
