Humans knew the cave bear as a powerful species of bear that roamed Europe and Asia during the Pleistocene era, disappearing around 24,000 years ago at the height of the Last Glacial Maximum. The name "cave" and scientific term spelaeus are used because fossils of this massive creature were predominantly discovered in caves, echoing expert opinions that cave bears likely spent more time within these dark recesses than their counterparts, the brown bear, which only uses caves for hibernation purposes.
