Skull Lantern LED Candle
thingiverse
A customized candle insert designed specifically for the Skull Lantern (http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:482307) is now available. For a better visual effect, check out this YouTube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ExqqrC4wbEs&feature=youtu.be (Please note that flickering looks more impressive in real life due to the low video quality). The original design of the Skull Lantern featured a tea-light led candle placed at the top, but I wanted it to resemble an actual candle. Therefore, I created this large candle insert which fits perfectly into the bottom of the lantern. The candle shaft is a resized and cropped version of http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:376176, courtesy of jradcoolness's artistic skill. Although I'm not an artist myself, I appreciate his contribution to this project. The base of the candle is divided into two parts with distinct openings for adding various components such as a switch, a micro USB socket for charging a battery, and a light dependant resistor. There is ample space inside the candle to accommodate an LIR2032 lithium-ion battery, a charging/protection board (http://sparks.gogo.co.nz/1A-Single-Cell-Li-Ion-Charger---With-Protection-383.html), adjusted for reduced charge current, and a PCB for the flickering LED circuit. However, I've only installed the flickering PCB at this time. A standard 5mm led (or two) can be inserted in the center of the candle, with one of them protruding out the top. I utilize a yellow and an orange LED, where the yellow one emerges from the top and the orange one provides internal diffuse lighting for the candle body (printed in white pla). This creates a beautiful effect – although it's not very bright, making it more suitable as a decoration rather than a practical lantern.
