Skull Bowl

Skull Bowl

I crafted the skull's interior in Meshmixer, performing trephination with precision and completing the final touches in 3D Coat. The print was executed flawlessly in white PLA on our SeeMeCNC Orion. White PLA often yields a scuffed appearance when sanded, but this time it worked to our advantage. After sanding away the obvious layer lines, the model no longer resembled a typical 3D print. I enhanced its realism with two coats of yellowish-brown acrylic paint and wiped it back before it dried completely, achieving an unsettling effect. Its compact size makes it ideal for sipping tea from your enemy's skull; if you prefer mead, you may want to enlarge the design slightly. The small dimensions add to the model's creepiness, giving it a haunting appearance that could be mistaken for a child's, a leprechaun's, or an enigmatic homunculus's skull. We discussed this project and much more about 3D printing on the 3D Printing Today podcast, available on iTunes, Stitcher radio, or directly from our source at http://threedprintingtoday.libsyn.com/.
