skull ashtray
thingiverse
The other day my buddy had a bad bike crash and then got some CT and MR scans followed by a brain surgery. Luckily, he's recovering well now. First thing I asked him for was his scan results. Since many were taken to show the bleeding in his head, most of them cut off his lower jaw, which wasn't ideal. But one scan stood out - it allowed me to remove the skull from it using 3d slicer (www.slicer.org), an excellent open source software. Unfortunately, I had to spend hours removing a bright halo around his teeth that ruined the whole scan. It turns out he has lead fillings in his teeth, so get them removed if you want a clean scan. After that, I imported the model into blender to reduce the number of polygons and fix some mesh issues (intersecting faces, flipped normals, etc). While working on it, I thought it would be cool to add some extras. My friend happens to be a big smoker, so now he has a detachable ashtray - you can also use it as a candy bowl or whatever people usually store in skulls. Future possibilities with different skull adapters are endless - holders for pencils or toilet brushes, raspberry cases, and more. Skulls come in all shapes and sizes. PS: I've got permission to share his intellectual property.
