The other day, my friend was involved in a serious bike accident, which led to some intense CT and MR scans followed by a brain surgery. Thankfully, he's recovering well now. As soon as he told me about the accident, I immediately asked him for his scans. Unfortunately, many of them were optimized to visualize the cerebral hemorrhage, so most had his lower jaw cut off. However, one scan stood out - it was beautifully clear and allowed us to extract the skull from it using 3D Slicer, an excellent open-source software (www.slicer.org). I spent several hours removing a radiant halo around his teeth that was ruining the entire scan due to lead fillings. I then imported the model into Blender to reduce the polygon count and apply some mesh fixes (intersecting faces, flipped normals, etc). While working on the model, I realized we needed some additional details. As it turned out, my friend is an avid smoker, so I decided to add a detachable ashtray - it's also functional as a candy bowl or storage container for whatever you prefer to keep in skulls. Future possibilities with various skull adapters are endless - holders for pencils, toilet brushes, raspberry cases, and more. The versatility of skulls knows no bounds. P.S.: I have my friend's permission to open-source his intellectual property.
