These STL files were derived from a SketchUp model on Google 3D Warehouse, available at http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/details?mid=63a428e39db417b9106b3048633eca78. The model, produced at the Center for Biomolecular Imaging at Wake Forest University Health Sciences and created using a CT scan of the head with segmented skull bones, acknowledges Drs. Stitzel and Link. It was printed on a BotHacker 3D printer (RepStrap), as detailed in this BotHacker blog post: http://bothacker.com/2010/05/18/printing-skulls/. However, printing this model poses challenges due to severe overhangs. Printing the skull upright would result in almost the entire bottom surface lacking support. Therefore, we chose to print the skull in two parts: a top and bottom section. The bottom part is flipped so that the cut plane becomes the bottom layer, while the top part remains upright. Both sections are essentially hollow hemispheres. Although this configuration still presents challenges and may have some issues at the top, defects will be hidden inside the model. There are remaining smaller overhangs, but they can be cleaned to become virtually unnoticeable.
