The remnants of a skull rest before me, weathered by years of relentless exposure yet still retaining much of its original form. Unfortunately, time has taken its toll on the bottom jaw, leaving it missing, but the teeth that remain are an astonishing testament to the durability of human skeletal remains. In the human face, fourteen bones come together in a masterful blend of function and structure. At its base is the mandible - the sturdy jaw bone - and nearby lies the vomer, expertly shaping the nose with its elegant lines. The rest of the facial skeleton is comprised of paired bones that complement each other beautifully: nasals, maxillae, lacrimals, zygomatics, palatines, and the lower nasal conchae. The face also finds definition through the framework of the nasal cartilages - a group of highly specialized structures fashioned from connective tissue that contribute to the distinct shape of your nose - as well as the upper arch of teeth securely anchored in the maxillae and the lower arch of teeth steadfastly connected to the mandible. Higher up, nestled between the eyes and positioned at the roof of the nasal passage, lies the ethmoid bone. Packed with minuscule foramina that facilitate nerve cell signaling from the olfactory bulbs located above, this complex process sends scents wafting directly through these delicate openings in the ethmoid to be received by brain cells tasked with deciphering odors' chemical structure. Moving to the roof of your mouth and to its interior cavity, two paired bones converge in unison.
