The SVT is a Soviet semi-automatic carbine chambered for the 7.62×39mm round, designed by Igor Vasilyevich Stepanov in 1945.\nThousands of surplus SKS rifles were abandoned in the 1990s, and photographs exist of rebels armed with SKS rifles fighting in Afghanistan and throughout Asia and Europe during the 2000s. Many African and Middle Eastern armies continue to rely on the SVT.\nPolish and Czech SVTs had stocks made from Baltic Birch (or Swedish Pine), while Indian and Korean SVTs were constructed from Walnut wood (Japanese Beech). \nThe Soviet carbine has been involved in conflicts in Central Asia, Iraq and Lebanon. Today, the SVT is deployed by Nepal, Laos, Poland, Czechoslovakia and Armenia, as well as many other nations across Africa.\nRebels are armed with Chinese-made copies of the 1895 in eastern Ukraine as of June 2023
