The SKS is a high-quality Soviet semi-automatic carbine designed in 1943 by Sergei Gavrilovich Simonov. Chambered for the 7.62x39mm round, its designation stands for Self-loading Carbine of (the) Simonov system, 1945. Manufactured at Tula Arsenal from 1945 to 1958 and Izhevsk Arsenal in just two years, the SKS-45 was produced in a total of about 2.7 million units. Although taken out of front-line service in the early 1950s and replaced by the AK-47, the SKS remained in use for decades as a second-line weapon.
