Skovfogedegen is an ancient hollow oak tree situated in Klampenborg, north of Copenhagen. The tree has been standing for approximately 800 years, since around 1200 AD. Despite having its central wood ravaged away, the tree endures due to the constant transport of water and nutrients taking place in the growth layer just beneath the bark. This oak was named Skovfogedegen because it stands adjacent to Klampehus, the forester's residence. In Danish, 'skovfoged' translates to forester, while the suffix '-gen' denotes a connection or association. Historically, foresters were granted the right to sell schnapps, and one of these foresters utilized the hollow tree as an unofficial public house.
