Skovfogedegen is an ancient, hollow oak situated in Klampenborg, just north of Copenhagen. This majestic tree has been standing tall for approximately 800 years. Despite the fact that its central wood has been torn away, Skovfogedegen remains upright due to a remarkable phenomenon: water and nutrients continue to flow through the growth layer beneath its bark. The tree's name is deeply rooted in local history. 'Skovfogedegen' translates to "forester" in Danish, referencing its proximity to Klampehus, the forester's residence. In times past, foresters were granted the privilege of selling schnapps, and one such forester cleverly repurposed Skovfogedegen as a makeshift tavern.
