Skoda Octavia wireless charging inserts
thingiverse
A couple of inserts to go in the front centre storage area of a 2021 Skoda Octavia hybrid, but it will probably fit any similar model. It's made to position a wireless charger for my iPhone 12 Pro Max so it lifts up the phone to allow it so sit flat on the charger as it's a little too large to simply sit on the floor of the box otherwise. I tried an Eono charger at first which works fine, but as the Skoda only provides a 5v USB-C connection it doesn't really charge the phone up with the 5W charging rate, but it does keep it from losing any charge whilst driving. I wanted to be able to charge the phone up as well so I tried an Apple magsafe charger with a USB tester and it showed that it was drawing around 10-12 watts even with a 5v supply so I decided to create a version for that instead. Whilst the magnets make alignment simple it means that the insert wants to come out with the phone so I added a little hollow to allow you to get your thumb underneath to release the phone. After a quick spray of black Plasti-Dip for a nice rubber coating I also sprayed the cable with Plasti-Dip after masking off the USB connection and with the wire now a rubberised black it blends in well. I secured the whole thing with a couple of strips of [1mm thick nano tape](https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B094RCGB3R) front and back and it now feels like part of the car. The nano tape holds really well and removes cleanly without residue The magsafe charger fits under a two-layer thick (with a 0.4mm nozzle @ 0.2mm layer height) sheet of plastic and it charges the phone just fine when used with an Apple magsafe leather case. The extra wire length from the charger coils up in the hollow and you can adjust the amount that sticks out for a neat finish. A dab or two of hot glue would hold the charger in place fairly securely but I found that it is held in fairly well and doesn't drop down, especially with the coiled wire underneath. As I had a piece pf two-layer print from when I was testing the basic shape, I just added a strip under the charger and then cut a piece to fit inside the chamfered hollow to keep it all in place and make it look neat. It doesn't really matter though as it's all hidden when installed. To print the Magsafe version I used 0.2mm layers with Prusament PETG and placed it face down on the textured bed for the best finish on the visible face. For the Eono version I printed it face up with the visible face dead flat for the best finish and used a lot of support underneath (resin printer style) as it wouldn't be seen. A quick sand with coarse sandpaper cleaned up the rough face for a good fit. The Fusion 360 files are a bit of a dogs dinner but I can add them if anyone really wants them **Edit:** Fusion360 and STEP files uploaded as requested.
