Skippy the Magnificent, or simply Skippy, is an artificially intelligent being created by the Elders millions of years before the series begins its journey. With an incredible ability to survive in space for eons, he finally lands on the planet now known as Paradise, discovered by humans from the United Nations Expeditionary Force. Initially stored in a warehouse by both the Kristang and Ruhar, Skippy's existence is later revealed to Joe Bishop, who teams up with him and other humans to steal a Kristang frigate and a Thuranin star carrier, forming the original Merry Band of Pirates. This partnership also leads to the naming of their group, the creation of their distinctive paramecium-with-an-eyepatch emblem on their uniforms, and the approval of calling their ship the "Flying Dutchman."
