Skippers 2
sketchfab
The upper reaches of the Shotover River near Skippers Bridge offer a glimpse into Maori Point's rich history, where rusting metal flumes and an abandoned dredge stand as remnants of the area's former gold mining industry. The stretch between Stony Creek and downstream from Maori Point approaches Low's Terrace, a testament to the region's alluvial gold rush of the 1860s. This pivotal discovery sparked a mass migration of men who flocked to the Shotover River, setting up sluicing operations on surrounding terraces and tributaries in search of gold. The construction of Skippers Road and Bridge was also initiated during this period, as well as several underground gold mines, including the historic Bullendale mine.
