The Skipjack Class submarine has been serving with distinction since its introduction in 1959. A total of six vessels have been commissioned, each one a marvel of modern naval engineering. Unfortunately, one of these remarkable submarines met a tragic fate when the USS Scorpion (SSN-589) sank in the Azores during May 1968. Powered by a single S5W nuclear fission reactor, this advanced submarine was capable of propelling itself through the ocean with incredible speed and agility.
