This demonstrates how skin changes its appearance from age 20 to 55. The outermost layers of the skin, known as the epidermis, form a protective barrier over the body's surface. The epidermis keeps water inside the body and prevents pathogens from entering by being a stratified squamous epithelium. It is composed of proliferating basal keratinocytes that multiply rapidly, and differentiated suprabasal keratinocytes that mature and die as they move up towards the skin's surface. Beneath the epidermis lies the dermis, a layer of skin made up of connective tissue that cushions the body from stress and strain. The dermis provides strength and elasticity to the skin through an extracellular matrix composed of collagen fibrils, microfibrils, and elastic fibers embedded in hyaluronan and proteoglycans.
