Skimmer Basket
thingiverse
Three prototypes of the same Skimmer Basket with an outer diameter of approximately 205 mm are being developed. Initially, it was believed that the service door to our skimmer would be partially obstructed by a safety pool cover, thus the design of the basket is split into two halves that lock together, allowing for each component to be inserted separately and assembled only within the skimmer chamber. This is version 1 (V1) of the basket. The top collar of the basket is thinner and features a locking mechanism that serves dual purposes: it strengthens the joint between the two sides and secures the Skimmer Basket sock I'm using to enhance filtration performance in place. However, despite the service door obstruction, the basket still managed to fit inside, prompting the creation of version 2 (V2): a single-piece basket with an improved locking mechanism featuring an additional knob for easier handling. The design of V2 is structurally the most robust and durable but has one significant drawback: it can only be printed with supports required for the outer collar. Depending on the support type and settings, this can result in considerable material consumption and extended print times. In my case, more material was needed for the supports than the actual basket, which is particularly unwelcome when using expensive CPE materials. This led to a significant increase in print time from 15 to 30 hours. As a result, version 3 (V3) was developed: instead of a separate lock and basket, this design features a supporting rim ring and the basket itself with all overhangs at a maximum angle of 45 degrees, allowing it to be printed without supports. However, I have not yet tested the print or functionality of V3, so use it at your own risk (which applies to all three versions). The supporting ring has no lock cuts on purpose, as this would compromise its structural stability. Its size and subtle profile make it easy to fit through the skimmer service door, and it also serves as a filter sock lock.
